Owner Profile

Dan Kurowski owns and operates Brillian Contracting in Sartell, MN. From 2003 to 2009, he owned Cornerstone Contracting of Fargo, which thrived until Kurowski moved into the heart of Minnesota this past fall and transferred the business to Brillian.

Kurowski grew up as the youngest son of a builder in Wahpeton, ND. Naturally, he helped out in the summers for his dad, learning about all aspects of residential construction along the way.

Kurowski’s exposure to the building industry brought him to Minnesota State University - Moorhead to earn his Bachelor’s degree in industrial management. He put himself through college by working construction in the Fargo- Moorhead area. 

His progression in the building industry continued after college while he visited with his mentor, Scott Kazmierczak, who owns Red River Tile. After they discussed Kurowski's ambitions, Kazmierczak  suggested that Kurowski start an S-corp and dive in head first. Kurowski took that advice and on Oct. 29, 2003, he opened Cornerstone Contracting in Fargo.

He started by offering what he knew best - finish carpentry and trim work. While Kurowski still focuses on finish carpentry, he also enjoys providing full-service contracting services. He builds beautiful homes with a variety of layouts. As his staff has grown, so has his knowledge and expertise. To meet customer demand, Kurowski and his crew also have honed their talents in decorative tile installation.

Being creative is one of Kurowski’s favorite parts of his business. He enjoys the challenge of developing the customers' ideas into realities, sometimes in unique and innovative ways.

“Collaborating with customers is always fun. I especially love being presented with their vague and uncertain challenges, and then coming up with the solutions," Kurowski says. "It allows us to be creative and innovative all at once, and then be the popular guys when the homeowners are blown away with the results."

Staying up to date with the latest trends in building homes is a challenge in itself. The newest styles inside and outside homes are constantly changing, but Kurowski enjoys watching for developments in the industry.

“More and more customers are asking for glass tile. When it comes to woodwork, we’re seeing a lot of wood/metal combinations, reverting to darker, richer earth tones. And oil-rubbed bronze seems to be everywhere this year,” says Kurowski.

Quality is always Kurowski’s top priority; he receives many referrals based on the excellent work his company provides.

“I love it when customers challenge us with new ideas for creating different looks. We’ve come up with some really beautiful touches in homes of all price points,” he says.

When he's not working on client projects, Kurowski enjoys spending family time with his wife, Rebecca, a communications consultant. They have twins, Breanna and Lillian, who are 3, and Grant, who is 1 1/2.
